The Kenya Public Benefits Organization National Federation (PBO) and Global Partnership Organization (GPO) team joined other stakeholders on 20th September 2024 during a clean up exercise in Nairobi as the world marked world clean up day held on 20th September each year, The team committed to keep participating in clean exercises more often in various parts of the city and across the country. the team during as the world marked clean up day called for continuous efforts to clean Nairobi as the river risks becoming polluted water mass as a result of pollution. World Clean Up Day activity held at the Michuki Memorial Park in Nairobi, the PBO national federation team and GPO Members promotes environmental conservationist of the river and the park that is named after former powerful Environment Hon. John Michuki,. The National federation of PBOs expresses concern on the current state of the Nairobi river which before Michuki passed on in 2012 had pledged to clean up
We laud H.E President Dr. William Ruto had expressed a firm commitment to completely transform the river into fresh safe flowing water mass for domestic use and conservso as it can be usefull for teh people. GPO and the federation appreciate the fact that the current minister and. H.E exellency the president had pledged to clean the river to benefit wananchi and create an alternative source of safe drinking water.
“We are disturbed that despite the president’s fervent declaration to make the Nairobi river a safe source of drinking water, the river had degenerated into a deadly eye sore with the potential of spreading water borne diseases by polluting the atmosphere.
It is not enough to periodically engage in clean ups just for photo sessions while little is happening on the ground as the situation now is alarming to the extreme and needs a massive intervention to stop those directing raw sewer into the water and develop a massive wash out.
The river was one of the historical landmarks in the city of Nairobi, East Africa’s largest metropolis, which should not be allowed to degenerate into a hopeless mass of dangerous waters while tax-payers are funding several government departments supposed to keep the water clean and habitable like it was in the past. We have identified those polluting the Nairobi river and we have given them enough notice what remains is to take drastic action to preserve the water source.Kind regards, Stephen K.
